About
About and data sources
Whiteout shows how much snow is on Alpine ski resorts, measured from satellites, and how it compares with past seasons. It is free, has no accounts and sets no cookies. Anything personal, like trip dates, stays in your own browser.
How the numbers are made
- Snow cover is the share of the ski area that the satellite sees as at least half snow-covered. The ski area is the ground within 250 m of any piste or lift. It measures cover, not depth.
- Cloud. Optical satellites can't see through cloud. Cloudy pixels are filled from the most recent clear view of that spot, up to 14 days old. Anything still unseen is counted as unknown, so on cloudy days coverage is a lower bound.
- Snowline is the lowest 50 m height band where at least half of the clear ground is snow-covered.
- Vs normal compares today's coverage with the median for the same date over past seasons, in percentage points.
- Piste conditions, where shown, are modelled estimates with a stated confidence, not reports from the resort.
Avalanche danger: always read the official regional avalanche bulletin. Nothing on this site replaces it.
